brief The time had come to redesign the company’s dashboard, a set of display metrics around which goals were oriented, and system performance was judged. The set of considerations was greater than can easily be described here.
Since the home page of the intranet consisted of variable instrument portals, this design would also effectively need to provide a replacement of the existing home page.
Using discount methodologies such as surveys, open-ended interviews and contextual observation, I gathered information with the hope of uncovering the nature of the audiences for these displays and the evolution of their desired outcomes.
Embracing hard constraints, I investigated the technologies available and found a balance between affordability, functionality and maintainability.
During the course of the research, I published a project blog (the first ever for the company) giving stakeholders a chance to follow along and weigh in if they chose to.
The final 40-page design document provided a narrative, infused with useful recommendations, rationales, drawings, diagrams and visual designs outlining the way forward. Accompanied by small proof-of-concept technical demos, the design described displays that met the needs of all stakeholders and gave clear technical direction as to how they would be implemented.
